Dear colleagues,
The COVID-19 pandemic, through its aggressiveness and rapid spread of the new coronavirus, seriously tests the medical condition of our patients, as well as the security of the
medical personnel dedicated to their care.
In this context, where there is a high risk of extended infection, specific to a community transmission, performing surgery or endoscopic examinations on patients suspected or
confirmed positive for COVID – 19, increases significantly.
The medical community today faces a series of uncertainties related to the identification of the best surgical treatment solutions, without altering the safety objectives of
the medical circuits. In this case, the abandonment of minimally-invasive surgery and implicitly of its revolutionary advantages in the desire to limit the risk of infection of
the operating teams, was unjustifiably suggested.
We are permanently concerned with identifying and recommending our members and the entire medical community in Romania, with information to support their decisions, making
balanced and adapted choices to the local conditions, in finding the best diagnosis and treatment solution for their patients.
We have been following with particular interest the recommendations of the European and American associations of endoscopic surgery,
EAES and SAGES respectively. The document assumed by the two organizations, has been translated with their consent, in Romanian, to be made available to you.
STI subscribes to these recommendations, with the intention of supporting the decisions of organizing the surgical therapeutic framework and based on them to develop, in your
departments, personalized protocols for the safety of the surgical maneuvers.
Kind regards,
STI Board Members
